The six days of creation had nothing to do with the creation of the planet. If you will notice in Gen.1:2, the earth was already in existence BEFORE the first "day" started. The 6 "days" of creation were time periods or stages during which Jehovah prepared the earth for animal and human habitation. The Bible does not say how long it took Jehovah to create the "heavens and the earth." It could have taken millions or billions of years.

Everything in the known universe was created during the 7 days, on the fourth day to be correct. Before the first day of creation, there was nothing, just a great void
Fourth day: God creates lights in the firmament of Heaven, to separate light from darkness and to mark days, seasons and years. Two great lights are made (note: they are not named), as well as the stars.

Believing the universe was created first...the universe was his 3rd grade project and he got a C. He went back to the drawing board and worked hard to get the A for effort for creating the earth. He had no idea his creation would evolve into the fungus we have become.

The Bible is very clear on this issue -- the 6 creative days were not 24 hour days.
Many denominations claim that mankind has existed ca. 6000 years now. Well, Paul ca. 1900 some years ago mentioned that the seventh day had not been terminated and that it had to include the 1000 year reign of Christ.
Thus we know that each day is at least 7000 year long or longer.

God created earth in one day, one the first day.
He rested on the 7th day.
Genesis 1:8 "And God called the firmament Heaven" on the second day. . . . So I guess it only took one day.

The Bible says six days for all of creation, including man. Now, whether this means six of our days or six of what one could consider God's days is debatable. As God is, was and will be, he would be timeless...so sixty billions years wouldn't mean anything.
I am not saying that I do not believe in the six day creation as I believe that God could have done it in a nano-second if he had chosen to do so...I am simply saying that the time reference may have been for our benefit as an aid to understanding the concept.

as long as He wanted it to take
1 day in the story could be thousands or millions of years
the story was written in this way so that we could understand it better
we cant imagine what a million years feels like, but we can with days
the universe would have taken some time!!! ;-P
God bless
