I think I am more traditional and use long. I fork swirl, then eat. Leftover sauce is good with Italian bread. There is no mess when done sopping it up.
I also mix the noodles and sauce upon completion of cooking. Otherwise, many people tend to take alot of sauce and very little spaghetti and when the meal is over, there a bunch of naked noodles. Plus mixing the sauce helps keep the spaghetti from clumping into a large glob.
Usually kids are the worst offenders for taking more sauce than noodles but even though my kids are gone, it's a habit I've kept.

Sometimes i snap the spaghetti in half if I'm cooking just for myself & mixing the spaghetti in the pan with fried vegies & juices etc then top with some cheese ( a meatless spaghetti no mince sauce but for normal spaghetti with mince sauce the long spaghetti

Short: they are easier to wrap around the fork. The dangling noodles and slurping are what make you look rude.
