Philippians 4:4-9 says "Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things. "
So that would rule out quite a lot of secular music.I mean,is Eminem and death metal pure, lovely,of good report, and virtuous?
But a blanket ban on all secular music would mean a ban on instrumentals and classical music as well.
So I would use Philippians 4:4-9 as a good guide to what music one shoud listen to.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to believe that I was so important that the creator--the force that controls the world and universe around us--gives a squat about what I listen to?
The fact is that music is an important vehicle for the thoughts of others. Many societies have even considered music--all music--sacred for it's ability to convey a message that words alone could never deliver. That is the reason that so many people thinks that music is evil--it makes you think.
I'll ask you this: Is it a sin to understand the hardships of life in the ghetto? Is it wrong to question the actions of your government? Is it wrong to look at the world throgh the eyes of other? If it is a sin to open yourself to these things and others, then yes, it's a sin to listen to sectular music.
With that said, there is soe stuff that, due to its content or complexity, is inappropriate for those who are not mature enough to consider what is being said through the music.

Of course not! Why would that be a sin?
For some Christians, it's not beneficial to listen to secular music. For example, before I became a Christian I was a huge fan of bands like KORN, but now...I can't really listen to that stuff. The gratuitous profanity really gets to me.
So now I listen to music that doesn't have a whole lot of profanity, if any at all. Whether it's secular or not doesn't matter to me. I listen to what I like, and what I can sing along with.
Every Christian is different.

Although of the top of my head I can't tell you in which epistle it is Paul dealt with something that might pertain to what you are asking.
There was a debate over eating meat left for idols. Many new Christains were being taught it was wrong. Paul said it really wasn't. He went on to say if you feel it is wrong then it is a sin, but the act of eating this meat itself was not a sin if it didn't bother you.
The same would (in general) apply to listening to music. If listening to a song bothers you or makes you feel like you are sinning then you are sinning. But (again in general) if it doesn't bother you then you are not in sin. It is a matter of acting against your conscience.
Now there is some music that definitely runs against God. That's why I say "in general." In that case, no matter what you feel, you're sinning.

No, it isn't a sin. However I do believe that music is inspirational and influential, and you should be careful about what goes in your ears!
Just like friends: your friends are the people you are, or the people you are becoming. Just be selective about the music you listen to. If you feel bad about it, then don't do it. If you do listen to it, be careful about your selections.
Just look at Christian music and how it affects people in church....they raise their hands, etc. Music is a wonderful, powerful thing.
I am a Christian, I listen to Christian music, but I also listen to good music that comes from any style.

As long as the secular music does not conflict with God's laws, such as by containing obscenities it is not wrong.
Ephesians 5:3-5 says: " . . .Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among you, just as it befits holy people; neither shameful conduct nor foolish talking nor obscene jesting, things which are not becoming, but rather the giving of thanks. For you know this, recognizing it for yourselves, that no fornicator or unclean person or greedy person—which means being an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and of God."
Music is a gift that God gave humans. We enjoy music. It's one of the talents that people have.

No, listening to secular music is not a sin, but, you know, if it does not edify you or build up your relationship with Jesus, then it's just useless.

I wouldn''t think the act of listning to any mustic would be considered a sin against God, but the way you view what you listen to, may or may not be.

I don't think it is. As long it's not something that you KNOW God wouldn't like... like Eminem stuff with all this cussing and all that.
I used to listen to Eminem, Avenged Sevenfold, and all that, but I stopped because it's not right.
But as long as it's clean, I don't think it's a sin.
