I'm sure this isn't a smart thing to do, but how feasible is it for a professional tattoo artist (not just some doof with a safety pin and ink) to tattoo himself? Have you known this to happen? With what results?

most tattoo artists have tattooed themselves. many of them have to be their first customer to prove to the person who taught them that they are ready to practice on people. my artist has tattooed a few things on himself and his tattoos look good. he is working up the nerve to tattoo a large piece on his thigh right now.

"A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client". I think this extends into other professions as well, not the least of which would be tattooing. Minimally, the art would suffer due to physical restrictions - how many painters paint with their off-hand, one eye closed, gauze over the other and balanced on their toes?

Can, yeah, I'm sure they can. Should is another matter entirely, and any artist who'd work on themselves I'd be a little leery of going to to work on me.

The guy that gave me my first tattoo gave himself a dragon's head on the inside of his tricep... pretty badass if you ask me! Many parlors will have their apprentices give themselves a tattoo before they get to work on someone else, that way they learn what it feels like and can better gauge pressure and depth of the needle.

I had a tattoo artist once that did 90% of her own tattoos, and I must admit, it looked good.

My tattoo artist/piercer does all of her own tattoos and piercings. She says she doesn't trust any one else to get exactly what she wants and where she wants it whether it be a piercing or the tattoo.

I had to as part of my apprenticeship, and still do from time to time. Did my foot the other day. Not the most comfortable thing to do though. But i just assumed most artists did w/ their apprenticeships as well.
