There is the mystical explaination and the practical explanation.
Mystical: Eastern metaphysics explains it in terms of ying and yang theory. Living beings are Yang and hence their "life force" or Qi is "warm". Spirit beings like ghosts and demons on the other hand are composed of ying energy whose life force is "cold", and these beings of the departed still cling on to their "living state" and hence, will attempt to get back to that state. So when they are close to the living, most times they will feel a " gust of draught".... or "chills" etc.
Being jolted awake or being pressed in the chest, is believed to be a class of spirit beings called incubi or succubi, the attack sleeping individuals by pressing on them, giving the illusion of breathlessness. They feed upon the "Fear" energy of its victims. The victims sometimes feel helpless, cannot shout, cannot move.
Practical explanation: The mind is playing tricks, we are bombarded by so much media that dark lonely places have monsters like Freddy Krueger or Vampires or demons that sometimes our mind creates such delusions, our body responds with a "fear" reaction.. - chills
As for the sleeping incidents- Chinese Physicians and Herbalists put it to these possible following causes
- the feet is exposed to cold, as our whole body's nerves are connected to the soles of our feet, once exposed to severe cold.. physical reactions will occur.
- You are lying on the left side of your body with a pillow thats too low, pressure is put on the heart... resulting in a sudden jolt awake. Try sleeping more on your right side or face up
- When you are sleeping face up with a fan or air con directed at your face and chest, it can cause the effect of seeming Breathlessness, this is because the moving air colliding with the warm air exiting from your wind pipe. And since mechanical air is stronger that a relaxed body breathing in and out, the physical reactionis felt by the sleeper.

The hair on the back of my neck will stand up when a ghost is in my presence and I sense it (a feeling in my gut). I do find it interesting that you think you're being slapped in your sleep. I've been poked in my back by a ghost when I was trying to go to sleep (alone in my bed). The hair pretty much stood up all over my body during this incident and my dog began growling.

People get chills for no reason all the time - I doubt it's ghosts...As for the slapping, is it at all possible that you're hitting yourself? My boyfriend flails around like crazy in his sleep, has hit me more than once, (while sleeping that is) and never remembers doing it. Look into night terrors and sleep disorders.

That happens to everybody -- being jolted awake. It's not a ghost. Ghosts don't exist, which is why you never see one. Hardly anybody ever sees one, and those that do, are making it up for attention or to simply tell a scary story.

This is a common experience for people; it comes from a part of our brain called the 'amygdala'. Complex neuropsychology, NOT GHOSTS.
