Try and set up an area just for him that is near a window. A nice bed and some of his favourite toys. If he can see the outside up close, then that might make him feel not so closed in. To keep him separated from the kittens, do this in a spare room where he can have his own space and also have access to a big window ( if possible ) so he can watch the goings on outside. Another good idea is to try and find a CD of outdoor sounds. You know, birds chirping, wind in the trees. It will probably have flute music or something peaceful playing in the background. Shouldn't be too hard to find one of those relaxation CD's with outside sounds like that. Hearing the noises of the outdoors should give him some comfort of what he used to do. Good luck.

It may be a lost pet. Unless you want to go out and knock on all the doors in your area - say within a 2 or 3 block radius - you need to contact a shelter, the humane society if there is one there, or animal control so that they can check the cat for a microchip ID tag. If there is one, the owner can be contacted. If there is no microchip ID tag, the shelter or such will keep the animal and if the owner is looking for it, one place they should be checking is all of the shelters in the area and the owner can find the cat at the shelter. If you can't take it in to your house, get the telephone book and start calling to see what organization you can find that will come and pick up the cat. If you are willing to do so, go out and start knocking on doors and see if anyone is missing a cat. I don't know what else to suggest to you. I'm fairly sure that the cat is a lost pet - the way it wants to come in is one indication of that.

Maybe buy him some inside grass for kitties, and place it in an area that has some sun. So he can sit near the grass and chew on it, and still get some sun?

I have never heard of this experience before and I'm sorry about your little boy.

I would just think anything outdoorsy that you can get for inside stuff for him would be good. It's not the same and I'm sure he'll see it that way but its better than not having any (I would think anyways, but I'm no expert)

Play with him a lot, bring him toys, talk to him, give him a nice soft bed by the window, in the sun, or take him outside for a moment in your arms, if you are sure he won't escape from you.

What about one of those things that goes in the window, that way he can smell the outdoors again!

Or maybe a pet stroller, my cat LOVES to go for walks in hers, and when I bring it in after a walk she always curls up and takes a nap in it.

First of all, it is bad to even let your cat out. he could get run over by a car, get a desiease, get bitten, get into fights e.c.t. my solution is make life fun inside. give him plenty of toys, pet him constanly(or when he wants it), give him treats or even teach him tricks. i taught my kitty tricks when she was recovering form being neutered to take her mind of things (she doesnt go outside). if he still despratley wants to go out, train him to walk on a leash.

well if he likes to play, get some interesting toys and play with him. you need to occupy his time, get some kitty grass, catnip toys, anything to keep him busy, after he heals well. poor guy, good luck to him.

amputate the remaining legs and change his name to "pillow".

Your "outside cat" is your neighbors' problem. That's why they disappear. People, not me, drop them off of free way overpasses and stuff. I opened the washer at my appartment complex in college and somebody had washed a cat to death. That wasn't me either. It made me puke. Plus I had to go to the far laundry room from then on.
Keep your pets indoors.
