*Fibre optical communications constitute an emerging high technology sector which has been growing very rapidly in recent years.
*One of the key components used in fibre optical communication systems is optical fibre coupler, a passive device that demultiplexes or multiplexes optical signals from one fibre or optical signal path to more fibres or signal paths. *A typical optical coupler is composed of a bundle of optical fibres, a substrate and a steel tube.

*Optical fibres in couplers may experience large vibration and occasional breaks under shock and impact in communication lines. Such fibre breaks severely interfere with proper signal transmissions.
