Why do people give so little information? Don't you know you will get better answers if you give us proper information?
If he has not been convicted but is in jail awaiting trial, the sheriff can tell you the charges. If he has been convicted you get go to the county courthouse and find out exactly what he was convicted of. The clerks are usually very helpful to someone who does not know their way around public records. Go to the Clerk of the Court.

The name and charge of a person arrested is public knowledge(Freedom of Information Act). You should be able to simply call the business number for the county/city department where you think the person is incarcerated and they should tell you.
There are a couple exception to this rule such as if the person is a juvenile or the department feels that releasing the information may put the person in danger or hamper an ongoing investigation but otherwise it is public knowledge.

Calling the local Police Department or District Court. Looking up newspaper articles help too. Crimes are generally public record.

Hard to answer with the "for free" thing. Odds are they were locked up for a reason.

You might try the website for the county sheriff's office or clerk's office. It the information is on public record, you will probably be able to find it there.

I only know about Arizona, but you can look up inmates here: http://adcprisoninfo.az.gov/ISearch.htm
Otherwise, go to google and look up "inmate locator" + "(the state thwe inmate is in)".
Good luck!
