Use boxing gloves when you do extensive pad or bag work. They have more padding so you will do less damage to your wrists and knuckles, allowing you to train longer and harder. Also, doing pad and bag work with the heavier boxing gloves will help you develop your technique better and also help with your punch speed. Kind of like when a baseball player swings 2-3 bats before he hits, it makes his bat feel lighter.

Depends on the school. Traditional boxing gloves have more padding than MMA gloves.
