I am buying a car from a private seller and I live 40 miles from where the car is. I want to drive it home after I buy it but I dont know if I'll need insurance as soon as I buy it (the day of purchase) but I will get insurance on it a few days after I purchase it. Also how long do I have to send the title in for correction after they sign it over? Thanks for your response(s)

P.S. I live in IL so I dont know if the laws vary from state to state

Can`t drive without a valid plate or travel permit/ temporary plate. in order to get one you must provide proof of insurance. Buy car- tell ins. co. - get coverage- pick up transfer sticker or plate. drive vehicle home without worry. Should you drive without ins and a trip permit and should you get into an accident as a result of the car not your own. you would be held resposible for all the damage. Might be worth the few days it takes to do it right.

Shop around for quotes with other companies to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere you can compare quotes here: INSURERATESNOW.INFO RE Buying used car from private party---plates, insurance, registration? I've bought from a lot before, but never a private party! When you purchase a vehicle from a person, how do you go about the whole insurance thing and of course there aren't any plates on the thing! How do you get it home if you can't make it to the DMV that very moment?! Does insurance have to be purchased before you can even leave the person's house??? How exactly does this process work? Oh, and I thought of something else: Let's say the person selling me the car had just re-registered it in January or so........does that mean it doesn't have to be registered again until that same time next year? Obviously my name has to get switched over on the registration......but why pay TWICE in one year for the registration on one car???

usually the change has to be done with in 10 bussiness days on the title as for the insurance if you have insurance now on a different car it should carry over for 24hours in most states but i would call your insurance company, if you have no insurance i would get some before you drive the car off, in florida its illegal to drive a car thats not insured, i dont know about IL thou.
if the saler has the car insured already you could drive it thou

good luck with it

Yopu should haveins before you even put the key in the ignition.
Fortunately, ins can be bought over the phone. Do you have an agent???
Give him make and model of the car, VIN, and he can issue a verbal binder.
To transfer the title, see a notary. He will do all the paperwork necessary.

What are you buying?

As soon as it hits the road it must have insurance. You can get a temp. insurance which will allow you to drive from Point A to Point B and no where else basically in 1 day.

I would call and lat your insurance copy bought this car and need it insured. All it take is one time and some time hindsight can be better then for sight. Or it is best to be safe the sorry.

You need insurance on it the moment you move it under its own power.

If you don't want to get insurance, get a tow dolly or a tow truck to haul it home.

Get the insurance first. Some companies will penalize you if you drove without insurance.
