It depends on what kind you take. Some laxatives work overnight, whereas others take only hours to take effect. Please read the product information that came with the laxatives to ascertain how quickly it will work. For most laxatives, if you don't take too much, you should simply feel an urge to go to the bathroom. Sometimes laxatives make your stool more 'liquid' and soft so be aware of that. Also, taking too much of any laxative can cause severe stomach cramps, leaking bowels, and diarrhea, so only take as much as is recommended.

Laxatives should be taken only for occasional constipation, and not on a regular basis, as believe it or not, they are habit forming. In other words, the bowel gets dependent on being purged, and will refuse to work without stimulation. A much better option is to eat more fiber, such as whole grain breads and cereal, fresh fruits and veggies, and drink plenty of water. Also, get enough exercise. Follow these tips, and you won't need to rely on laxatives to get things moving. Good luck!

To rehash - you shouldn't take laxatives to lose weight, and you shouldn't use them for many days on end.
Stimulant laxatives (senna, dulcolax, cascara, most herbal preparations) are most likely to give you stomach cramps.
Enemas and suppositories are quickest and...most likely to make you get your hands dirty.
Lubricant laxatives (liquid paraffin, lactulose, most of the oil-based preparations) are most likely to make you mess up your pants suddenly. Magnesium (epsom salts) has the same effect after a longer wait.

Depends on what you take. Some will give you cramps and loose stools, others may simply cause you to "need to go".
