Do I need to complete college courses for this career or is it something a vocational school offers? Either way how long does it take?

There are both college and hospital programs. Generally, college programs are much more expensive, but easier to get into, but hospital programs give you better training (in my opinion). It's currently a full time two year program, but that may change to 3-4 years in the future. I'm sure it varies, but I went through a hospital program and it was 40 hours per week (with no pay, of course).

One of my co-workers just completed an Associate degree program that is supposed to be 2 years.

That doesn't take into account any remedial work or prerequisite work you must complete before you get accepted.

The programs are competitive.

And all that I've seen require general education.
