They are both female. Cleo is upset. She will act curious and follow Schatze around but if she gets too close Cleo will hiss and swat at her. Of course we are giving Cleo lots of extra attention. I know Cleo needs time to get used to having another cat in the house. I was just curious on the average time it may take or if there is anything we can do to help the process along??

What you need to do is be patient with both cats as there's really no way to tell how long it's going to take...it's just dependant on the cat. You need to personally make sure that you're on their level when they're together and giving both cats the reassurance they need to feel comfortable with one another. Honestly there's not a definite answer on that as the cats may never be the best of friends, but most cats will learn to at least co-exist. Just give them time and don't be disappointed if they aren't best friends immediately.

The time it takes for an adult to adjust to a new kitten varies from cat to cat. I've known cats that are playing together the day they are introduced, and other cats that haven't totally accepted a newcomer after years of living in the same household. It all depends on the individual cat.

Most would advise keeping them in different rooms for a while to get used to the new scents, but since they've already been introduced, time is the answer.

What you're doing is definitely good. Cleo probably needs to be reminded that she's still loved and wanted, and that she's not being replaced.

As for the hissing and swatting... It should lessen in time, but if Schatze gets on Cleo's nerves a hiss or a swat is how Cleo will tell her to back off. Even after years of being together a hiss or swat is one of the many ways one cat will tell another one that they want to be left alone.

If Cleo is normally friendly and patient, I wouldn't think it would take too long. My oldest is a very patient and friendly furball, and the last time I brought a kitten into the house they were playing together within a few days, and my oldest was giving baths within a week... Which was three weeks sooner than I'd predicted.

I wish I could give you more advice than that, but other than giving Cleo extra love, giving the situation time is about all you can do.

Don't give the kitten the run of the house yet. Confine her to a bathroom or something. Let her out only when you can supervise them. That gives Cleo a little more peace - and a little more prestige. She isn't losing her home to an interloper then. When you do introduce them make it as positive an experience as possible. One trick I've heard of is to take canned tuna fish juice and put it on your hands and rub down both cats before letting them interact. That way they smell the same, and to them they smell good. Or you could just out last them. Eventually they normally will make peace, esp. since one is a kitten. They may never be best friends though. And even if they become friends, they aren't going to let you see it for awhile. Cats are quite adept at manipulating us with guilt.

I read somewhere that you can buy introduction pens, in which the new pet is placed inside and the other cat outside. That way Cleo can get used to Schatze on her own terms, and everyone is safe. Every cat is different. Just google it and hopefully your question can be answered. Goodluck!!

My older cat hightailed it on top of the fridge when I brought a kitten home & stayed there for 2 days, coming down at night to eat & use the litter. I never left them unsupervised for the first week or so. By the end of the week, she realized the kitten wasn't going anywhere & she got used to the idea. I gave them treats together, threw toys together, pet them at the same time etc. Now 4 years later they co exist peacefully. Have fun with their antics & playing. It's a hoot! Good luck!

Sounds like mine. Right now, she's not sure the kitten even belongs in the house, so she's making sure she's not getting into trouble. In a few days, you'll see what looks like fighting, but really they are playing. As long as nobody is whimpering, it's okay. You'll know they are buds when they sleep near each other, though they will still chase and pounce and even hiss.
