All of your answers are great and personal. You can't say who is the best, though, it's all personal taste.

Has anybody EVER done what Robert Johnson did.... I don't think so. How about the great Howlin' Wolf and his main man, Buddy Guy. Or Muddy and his right hand man, Hubert Sumlin. If you listen to some old Muddy, you can hear Mr. Sumlin playing the same licks that SRV, Hendrix and Clapton use on almost every song, only 15 to 30 years prior.!!! Then we must mention the "Kings". We hear allot about B.B., and rightly so. But don't forget Albert and Freddie. "Cross Cut Saw" IS my favorite Blues song!!! There are so many young hotshots out there it's hard to mention any because you can;t mention them all. Some I really enjoy though are Anson Funderburg and his band The Rockets, as well as Charley Beaty of Little Charley and the Night Cats, both UNBELIEVABLE GUITAR PLAYERS!!!!

I'll quit now, I'm sure you are bored with my rant. I'll leave you with this...

"BLUES IS GOOD NEWS"

The best I ever saw in concert was Stevie Ray Vaughn, I saw him with about 2000 other people at the Toledo Sports Arena in Toledo, OH. It was great, the place wasn't crowded and he rocked. If anyone has been to a concert there they know why I'm saying these things about the venue.
When I want to listen to some Blues nowadays I put on some Eric Clapton. He does things with a guitar that other people dream about. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him in concert because the opportunity just hasn't come about. I hope to see him some day.

There have been more than 50 answers to this question, so you now have 50 opinions.

Could it be said that the best blues guitarist in the world was (or is) a person who was never touched by fame and commercialism, who was pure in soul, who was uncorrupted by money and who was so obscure, he continues to defy the line between fact and legend?

Perhaps he is a messiah, waiting to return and show us the way through his pure beauty and effortless talent. Perhaps it is that quality portrayed by John Coffey in "The Green Mile", which passes inself along to the most qualified or deserving recipient.

I don't know the answer to this question, because all of the persons already mentioned have been corrupted, exploited and sacrificed for the sake of being called 'Blues Guitar God'.

I don't know if you have ever heard of him - he died just recently - but, Ali Farka Toure from African was as close to pureness and perfection in my book. Listen to his recording with Ry Cooder (who also is not mentioned) and see what I mean.

People tend to like asking subjective questions here...I think the greatest blues guitarist that ever lived is Roy Buchanan. I also gotta give props to Robert Johnson, Son House, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman...

Honourable mentions to great newcomers; Doyle Bramhall II, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Johnny Lang, and John Mayer

Stevie Ray Vaughan, in my opinion, took everyone's music and put his own twist to it so it sounded like his. And it was his music. Stevie Ray did that and he became famous for it.

As for others, I think Johnny Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, Lightning Hopkins, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. They orginally are the Blues Kings. And there will be no one as great as them when they die or if they are dead, no one will be as great as them.

We don't realize how great these people are until we've lost them. Look at Stevie Ray. He had just gotten sober and he died. And there are still more to come. This world will be nothing without the Blues.

As for living guitarists I'd have to go with either B.B. King or Clapton.

I give props to Robert Cray, Johnny Lang and Derek Trucks.
Johnny Winter is also excellent.

All time would be hard name. Maybe John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray or Duane Allman.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. Living, Kenny Wayne and Clapton are both fantastic guitarists. Guys like McCready can play great blues as well.
