Or at least as little as possible.

I would like to travel to Lhasa, but rather support Tibetan people with my money, rather than the Chinese governemt.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Do what many others do. Stay at Tibetan owned hotels, and eat at Tibetan restaurants. Don't eat or shop at Chinese owned establishments or stores. The only way to avoid giving a lot of money to China is to fly to Kathmandu, take a bus to China, walk across the border, and take a bus inside Tibet. Although everyone hates the Chinese in Tibet, elsewhere they are in general not really bad at all.

I don't see how you're going to get around needing a tourist visa or a travel permit to go into Lhasa, both of which require payment to the Chinese gov't, or how, without knowing Tibetan, you'll be able to tell clearly who's Tibetan or Chinese.

Fly to Kathmandu and hike the rest of the way.

tricky! I am not sure you really can, to be honest. Some of the money is bound to end up in the governments hands
