Combat Servive Award is one that is given to a soldier who was ferocious in battle that led to the accomplishment of the mission of the unit such as taking over an enemy camp.

It's earned, not won.

A combat service award comes at many levels and depending on which level and unit policies it takes different criteria. (shouldn't be that way but I've seen senior officers get silver stars for things that lower enlisted didn't get the lower bronze star for.)

That being said, the medal (award) comes with a certificate and citation as well as orders. In reverse order from listed, it will tell you specifically what was done to earn it.

Some medals/awards are blanket across the unit for unit actions or being there. A soldier earns a 'service stripe' for 6 months in a combat zone, a combat patch for being there 30 days, and a campaign medal for a certain amount of time. (or is 30 days for the campaign medal and 24 hours for the combat patch?) A campaign medal could be the "GWOTEM" (Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal) or the SWASM (Southwest Asia Service Medal-Desert Storm).

If you tell us what he got, we might be able to be more specific.

First, you don't 'win' it you are awarded it.

The CIB, CAB, CMB and the CAR for Marines are basically awarded for being 'personally present and under hostile fire in a unit actively engaged in ground combat with the enemy'. That does not include being subject to indirecrt fire. There are more specific eligibility requirements for each.
A Commendation Medal can be awarded with a 'Combat V' to denote 'those individuals who were awarded a decoration in recognition of valorous act performed during direct combat with an enemy force'. Example of these medals are the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, Commendation Medals, the Air Medal, Achievement Medal, and certain unit awards.
There are awards which are bestowed for valor, such as the Medal of Honor and Silver Star.
