You need to read Melody Beattie's book The Language of Letting Go.
Your friend is not "insane". But if you keep thinking you must "fix" him, he will go that way eventually. Stop thrusting fear on him. Tell him he's not crazy. Tell him he needs to talk to a psychologist if his experiences are bothersome to *him*, not to YOU. And allow him to be the owner of his own stuff.

First of all, redirecting someones darkness to yourself is, at best, a short term solution. Even if you are strong, and the other person is very weakened using yourself as a human shield only makes you both weak and helpless.
Second of all, it sounds like your friend is subconsciously drawing the darkness to themselves. Trying to shield them would not fix the problem.
Your friend needs to stop self hating; they are using their own strength to attack themselves.
NO you cannot just tell them. The subconscious mind does not work like that; they are not doing this on purpose. NO you cannot get angry AT them (directly); all you would be doing is heaping your hate on their self-hate.
Teach them to like themselves. Keep them busy doing creative things. Teach them crafts. Show them small successes that can grow into large successes.
If that does not work, then GET OUT. If they hate themselves that much and are strong enough to stand so much self abuse, then you are more likely to be harmed collaterally.

don't take his pain...that is his trip in life but you can help him....obviously he lost his faith or no one ever "taught" him about spirituality...maybe you can by being his friend and teaching him....bless his house for him...I swear my house is cursed....just always so negative here..I recently went to a church with a small little container of blessed water and someone told me to make the SIGN of the Cross in each adjacent corner of the walls....trying something is better than nothing at all...and have him see a Doctor for anti-depressants....he should be on them for a little while to get other this crisis...

You DO NOT want to do that. Try some protection and/or banishment. YES you CAN bless/cleanse the house!!! I do it all the time, people come to me to get it done!!! It has nothing to do with christendom, BTW. If he is seeing these things, he should relax, open up, and with a guide explore.

why would you want to go through somebody else's torture?????? These symbol sightings are all in his head. I would try to get him to some sort of mass or priest, just because your not religious doesn't mean you can't be blessed or talk to God.

You do not need to take away his bad luck. Do you know when it started? Could it be bad Carma? If not, than you need to take him to talk to a priest or someone that can help him find the way he needs to go. Maybe this is God's way of telling him to come back to him.

It is very noble of you to want to take the pain for your friend. Unfortunatley, I have never heard of such a spell.
