i would not attempt to do a 6 hour tattoo in one sitting however you shouldn't finish it the next day unless it is absolutely necessary (like if you are traveling far to get it) you should ideally get as much as you can in one sitting and let it heal for 2-4 weeks and then go back for the rest of it. i have worked on one tattoo for about 19 hours and over quite a few sessions.
good luck!

The ribs is a very painful spot due to a lack of fat and a whole lot of bone =) Like everyone here has said so far though, the pain is always worth a great piece of art. Of course I remember the pain that came with each of my tattoos, but when I look at them all I think of is how pleased I am to have them!
Going back to have it finished up will indeed suck, I won't lie. The area that was worked on is going to swell up a little bit and it will be very tender, so it may hurt a little more during the second session. You may want to wait a week or so to let it settle down before going in again if you can't finish it all up in one sitting. Ask the artist what they feel is a good way to go about getting it done, I am sure they have dealt with similar situations before and can more likely than not give you the best advice.

The pain is virtually unbearable. It is something I would not recommend nore do ever again. You just want it to be over instantly and obviously its not, tattoos take time. I don't recommend it but once they've started it, it has to be finished. If its something you want reallllllly bad then do it. A tattoo doesnt feel like a needle, but like a sharp little blade slowly ripping the top layer of your skin, its more very uncomfortable than very painful. So on the ribs its just 30 times worse of that feeling. Outline hurts like a biatch, shading isnt too bad in comparison.

It's all frame of mind. Expect it will hurt and get over it. If you let the nervousness get to ya you'll just get sick. Happens all the time. We actually had a hypnotist come into our shop to help people with pain and he said its all in your head. Deep breaths, focus on your breathing pattern and how nice your work will look. As far as breaking it up, I'd say go for it. Nothing wrong with doing an outline in one sitting then going from there. The second round you'll know what to expect. But remember you'll prob have to wait a couple weeks between sittings. As an artist I prefer to break things like that up, knowing someone is freaking out just makes you rush the work.

Yes the rib cage is a painful place, but when you want something you will just go head and get it without even thinking about the pain. Every tattoo you get is for a reason and that is why you get it and the place where you get it symbolizes something. So you must have your reasons so dont stop go head and just get it over with. I have a few and I am addicted. I am going back for my fourth one. And each one symbolizes something in my life. There is a reason for everything!! And there is a reason why you want it on your rib cage. Go head girl, get it!!!!!!!!

Any tattoo that is pretty much on skin and bone is going to be a bit painful. Be prepared for it to hurt, but don't let that stop you. A few minutes of pain is worth a lifetime with great body art.
