Here's the deal: practicing members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints DO NOT practice polygamy. People who claim to be "Mormon" (like those seen on 20/20) are NOT members of the LDS church, no matter how much they and the media try to claim that they are.
I'm sorry that you are so misled that you would ask a question like this.
Edit: And if someone DOES claim they are a member of the LDS Church and practice polygamy - they will be and are excommunicated.

Your question is an excellent example of ignorance by choice. You also sound like you have a chip on your shoulder regarding men.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do not practice polygamy. If they do they are excommunicated. Men in the church do commit adultery, unfortunately, just as men of other religions and those without religion, but they are usually chastised and in some instances, excommunicated.
I joined the church when I was 30 and have been a member for 20 years. I don't consider myself a 'slave'. In fact, that is actually laughable! My husband has not had affairs and has no other wives, he wouldn't have time, and he doesn't have the desire.
Again, you seem to be angry at or about something and I don't think that being so adamant and hostile about Mormons practicing polygamy is going to help you get over your problem.
Perhaps you should face your concerns a little more honestly, and more knowledgeably.

Okay, who exactly is a member of the LDS church (mormon) and practicing polygamy? Maybe you should tell their churches bishop, then they will be excommunicated and stop misleading you. The FLDS church practices polygamy, but they are a small weird religious cult/sect mostly in Utah not really associated with the church, many different beliefs, they also don't consider themselves "mormons"
I was an LDS convert.
HOWEVER LDS members can practice polygamy in Heaven! A man can be sealed to one woman, she dies, he can be married to another one (all temple marriages) she dies, ect ect ect. Then in Heaven he can have all his worthy wives with him, if he is worthy enough of course.

Mormons don't practice polygamy anymore. You may not want to hear it (guessing, by your added details) but it isn't a "crap" statement. It's totally true. Mainstream LDS haven't condoned polygamy in well over 100 years. Some splinter groups practice it, but they aren't even recognized as members of the Church. I'm a lifelong LDS and if I am lucky enough to find a great woman, I want to spend eternity with her, and only her.
Sorry if that bothers you. Ignorance is a breeding ground for prejudice.

Your EDITED remarks are way out of line. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a manifesto agains plural marriage in 1890 by the mouth of the President of the Church at that time, Wilford Woodruff. The Church has not encouraged nor practiced plural marriage since that time. It is still a doctrine in the Doctrine and Covenants and is a part of the eternal scheme of things. We believe it was a true doctrine given by God at the time for a particular reason. That reason was for the most part fulfilled and the practice therefore no longer necessary. Besides, the Federal Government would have legally forced the Church out of existence if we had continued. Therefore, God allowed us to discontinue the practice for the good of the Church as a whole. The government that forced us to be unable to obey the principle will be held accountable in the eternal accounting of things.

Polygamy is banned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints... The purpose for it's practice was to give worthy women a chance to be sealed to a worthy Priesthood holder. Many women joined the Church who either lost thier husbands before the keys of sealing were restored or their husbands did not join the Church. So those women were sealed to worthy priesthood holders as were their children at times. You want answers go to www.mormon.org

I think that when Joseph Smith first instituted the doctrine of polygamy, it was to fulfill his own sexuall lusts and to cover up his adulterous affairs with numerous women. However, to say that is why mormons practiced polygamy would be incorrect.
Their purpose for practicing it was purely motivated by their dedication to that Faith. It is interesting to note that their were only a few mormons who practiced polygamy back then.
The Church has officialy banned the practice "for now." Sure, there are a few people who are still in the LDS and practice it. That is outside of the church though. The FLDS (20000 members) is the schism that openly practices it.

It just occurred to me that modern polygamy is practiced secretly by all sorts of individuals. Most recently there was a news story regarding Mexican men leaving their wives and family to literally start a new lift as an 'illegal', including 'marrying' another woman in the US.
Back to the mormons: Section 132 of the Doctrine and Covenants still exists and has not been retracted, and is not going to be retracted. B Young was a fervent believer in Smith, followed his example, and claimed that not only can you not gain salvation by polygamy, you are damned if you do not practice it.
Like so many other controversial statements, they're just an 'opinion'. For that matter, so is every written document ever produced by the church.
