Not cheap is the short answer. Studios in Manhattan are close to $2000 a month. (I know someone who pays $2500 a month for little more than a closet.) You can get cheaper - but they're SCARY. Other boroughs - like Brooklyn - are significantly cheaper to rent. You could have a 2 or 3- bedroom for that same $2000.

The worst apartments you can probably get for around 7 to 800 dollars a month. But you wont get much. The better apartments go for around 20 to 2400 a month. Now if you are looking to buy one you can get a 1 bedroom apartment for around 250,000. The better ones go up into the 600,000 dollar range. And of course if you want the best they can go up to 25,000,000

A small studio apartment is around the 1200 dollar range and it goes up from there. If you look in brooklyn or queens you can find a 1 bedroom for 1200 or so. Then as you get bigger you get more expensive, and as you get away from the city you get less expensive.
