I've asked this question many times in the past and noone seems to know the answer. I've always told my kids that it's illegal (red light moving violation) to turn right from the 2nd lane from the right unless it is green/right green arrow on the traffic light. I know that it is okay to turn right (on a red light) from the very right lane after stopping and making sure it is safe to turn. I looked for an answer in the DMV but could not find it. Does anyone know?

By the way, this is a 4 way traffic intersection. There are 4 lanes each direction. 2nd from right is straight or right turn.

Although traffic laws are somewhat different depending on where you live, jurisdictions that allow right turns on red usually allow that right turn on red only from the far right curb lane. If you are in the 2nd lane from the curb you cannot turn right unless *the lane you are in* has a specific overhead green right turn arrow. It's sort of like turning right (or left) from a one-way onto another one-way. Unless the turn is specifically intended for traffic in your lane, such turns can only be made from the curb lane. Have a really good look at the wording of the particular DMV law that applies and you will probably see mention of 'curb lane only'. Good luck!

Very good question, I to am interested in this response. Unfortunately I have no reason to have to know this because in my rural are we do not have any streets like this, we only have on traffic light in the whole county...lol.
My guess would be that if it was a lane that allowed you to turn right under green and there was no sign saying otherwise (no right on red) then it would be the same as the far right lane. You would proceed to turn right the same as if it was green only after you made sure it was clear to do so. Since you would be turning into the second lane over on the street you were turning onto you would have to make sure that both lanes were free of traffic.

If your state allows right turn on red and the lane is marked for a right turn it is completely legal. This is even true if the lane is marked for both straight and right turn since the curb lane would be marked right turn only.

I know in Michigan it is legal IF the lane is a right turn lane.. If you were in the wrong lane all together it may change the legality..

Steve is right, if it is a right turn lane and it is not posted that "no turns in red light", then it is legal.

if it is a double right turn lane and is not posted no turn on red then it is legal to turn right from that lane.

No, it is legal. State laws vary, but so do intersections. I've done what you describe and I've been followed immediately by the police - not to pull me over, but to go through the intersection just like I did.
I've also made left turns on red into one-way streets in front of police, who did the same thing.

Well heck idk if it's legal or not but it sure isn't very safe, I wouldn't do it unless I was towing a large trailer and then only to swing out after making sure both lanes are clear, it's not a smooth move here to try and impress nobody thou lol.
