Latin is referred to as one of the Romance languages, as in modern day it is the dead language. It was prevalent during the times of the Roman Empire, where it flourished especially by the Catholic Church and erudite scholars. Latin root words, stems have significantly contributed to the English Language. Many English words use prefixes like ex (out), de (down), ab (from), equi (equal). Today Latin is used in the Vatican City, northern Italy where the pope lives, and it's predominant in medicine. Spanish derived from Spain, where it originated in northern Spain, and a dialect of Latin. It is considered the romance language. It is the second most spoken language, and is the official language of many Latin-American countries, after it was spread by the Spaniards. It is also spoken in Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Oceania. Spanish dialect is also found in the English language, these are called cognates because they sound alike. However some cognates may sound like an English word but mean something completely different. Many language derived from the origin of Latin, and it is considered dead because it is very old and not commonly used.
I love Latin, I think it's a very romantic and beautiful language. ^.^

1. is an ancient Indo-European language originally spoken in Latium, the region immediately surrounding Rome.Latin has had a significant influence on many other languages still thriving today, including English, and continues to be an important source of vocabulary for science, academia, and law; it is also used by the Catholic Church, and still evolving, making it technically still alive. Romance languages (Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Romansh, Spanish and other regional languages or dialects from the same area) are descended from Vulgar Latin, and many words adapted from Latin are found in other modern languages—including English, where from Latin roughly half of its vocabulary is derived, directly or indirectly.[1] This is part of its legacy as the lingua franca of the Western world for over a thousand years.

2. Spanish: is a Romance language originated as a Latin dialect .

So Spanish as you can see derivates from latin, but also from Greek when you see the roots of the words you can see the origin and in many different languages as mentioned above have similar meaning.

Spanish is a so-called romance language because it is derived from Latin, as are Italian, French, Portuguese, and Catalan.

Many of the words in the various romance languages are similar to each other and of course also similar to Latin words. Modern Italian comes closest to classical Latin, except for the pronunciation of certain words.

Latin is the language spoken anciently by the Romans.

Because it is not spoken actively nowadays, it is stable (it does not undergo changes), so it is used by various groups such as doctors, biologists, and the Catholic Church who want to record things in a way that will be understood for long times.

Spanish is the national language of Spain and several New World Countries (such as Bolivia, Argentina, and Mexico).

The two are similar but not the same, even as Danish and Dutch are similar but not the same.

Latin is a ancient and "dead" language, many languages derived from it, including Spanish.

Don't think of "Latin" of language like it is "Latin" from Latino.

On the following link you can find good reference on what Latin is as a language:
