I recently took my dog to the vet. He was showing signs of Cushing's Disease(drinking lots of water, lethargic, pot belly). His bloood test has a high enzyme count in the liver. He has to go back in next week for the Cushing's test which involves fasting, then two different tests within eight hours. What kind of life can a dog have with Cushing's Disease? Will it be a good quality life? How often will he need to go in for the doctor to monitor his blood tests?

We have several canine patients with Cushings. The medicine has to be adjusted in the beginning, and several blood tests will need to be done to make sure medication levels are where they should be. Once he is stable, most vets will monitor every 6 months at least. It is rather serious, but they can do quite well for years if well cared for.

I don't know about dogs, but people with Cushings can be successfully treated--Barbara Bush has it. Do a websearch for canine Cushings. Good luck with him.
