My 13 year old cat, Flower, was crying night before last...she does that big MEOW when she wants to go outside, but I took her into my bed because she seemed different. Yesterday, she didn't want to eat (she's the first one to go to the kitty food) she's the fattest out of our six kitties. Anyway, I took her to the vet today, she has a severe kidney infection and has hepatitis because of the kidney infection. She is on Ciproflaxin IV and the vet tech said she is doing better tonight. I love this girl so much, he said that we still have to rule out cancer.

Do you have any experience with this? I don't want Flower to suffer, she is such a special cat...any words of advice are greatly appreciated, please and thank you so much. I know she will be fine, but I have to wait until Saturday for the vet's diagnosis.

My 10 year old cat Sydney had kidney disease- i don't know if thats the same as a kidney infection but the vet gave him six months to live if I gave him treatment. I loved him so much and didnt want him to die so I went ahead with the prescribed treatment of subcutaneous fluids under his skin twice a day. This kept him alive for four months until one night his kidneys failed and he died in my arms. I have since regretted that the last few months of knowing Sydney were ruined by constantly sticking him with needles. He had become afraid at the sight of me out of fear that I'd "hurt" him again. If I could go back I would have chose to put him to sleep peacefully instead of having him suffer those last months.

I'm so sorry your girl is ill. I think she is very lucky to have such a caring owner.
It sounds like she has already responded to treament so far. 13 years is older, but not that old, so hopefully she'll get through this episode.
Ask whatever questions you need to of the doctor and techs - that's what they're there for. And, if you want to visit her in the hospital, ask that too. In my experience, most sick cats do well when the owner visits. It often perks them up, and after the visit, they seem to be calmer.
Kidney and liver infections are certainly treatable. Just keep doing the best you can and hope for the best outcome. If you have confidence in your vet, stick with them. If you don't feel confident, you always have the option of a second opinion. It's so sad when our friends are sick. I sympathize and wish you good luck.

I have had three of my cats diagnosed with cancer and the waiting for the reports to confirm or deny is extremely difficult so you have my sympathies.

You just learn to take one day at a time. For today she is doing better and her treatment seems to be helping her. I hope she will be home with you soon. You will go from there according to what the vet determines.

Obviously Flower is not feeling great. I'm sure you have gone through that yourself. It is not suffering. So don't worry about it now. You are taking good care of her and I hope she will recover and be her old self.

I've been through exactly this, usually the kidney infection is caused by oral infection or bladder infection, but sometimes it comes out of the blue due to already failing kidneys. If they can rule out cancer, you will be one step closer to recovery. If your kitty stays strong and responds well to the antibiotics and treatments, she has a good chance of regaining her health.

Unfortunately, because of her age and the possiblity that her kidneys were already diseased before the infection began, she may in fact not be able to pull out of her funk. It is hard to see your cat in such misery, and I know exactly how you feel. If it comes to that, please be strong and help her pass peacefully with euthanasia.

Good luck.

It sounds like she's in the right place getting good care. She needs fluids to flush out the infection, and the IV antibiotics will help work faster. You have to give it some time to see if all is helping. You'll know more in a couple of days. Meanwhile, she is resting and trying to get better. Good luck.
