My friends chihuahua has some kind of rash on its butt. And it's slowly spreading, and the dog is losing hair. I told him to take it to the vet, and I'm pretty sure he's gonna, but can you give me an idea as to what this might be? I suggested it might be mange. But I'm not sure.

Possibly mange, but also could be allergies or hot spots as was mentioned.. Hot spots are basically areas of sensitive skin that becomes itchy.. the dogs try to scratch or lick and it can become an issue.. (they sell spray's and creams for it), Allergies are a bit more problematic, but still easily treatable.. (it's mostly just trying to figure out what the allergy is from).. Mange requires treatment or it just gets worse.

Is the dog pulling his fur out? Have you felt the rash, if it feel hot then its hot spots, it might be mange, if it is that can only be transferred from mommy to puppy. It might be the dog is allergic to fleas and it has fleas. Is the owner giving it a lot of baths? it might have dry skin. there are tons of things the dog could have. just make sure it gets to the vet.

Most of the time itchy and hairloss around the butt is due to fleas. Favorite place for fleas to hang out is back half of dog around base of tail. He may have a skin infection from itching. Vet will give medication if needed and recommend good flea control. Mange usually starts on the face and front legs due to pups nursing--which is how it is spread from mom to pups.

Could also be an allergy to his food... happens a lot... tell him to pick up a bag of Royal Canin... they make a food specifically for chihuahuas... its worth the little bit more because they eat less of it and he'll be picking up after the dog less as the food has no byproducts in it for fillers... great stuff :)
