FAFSA determines eligibility of Federal Aid for Pell Grant as well if student is eligible for Stafford loans or not. Your Classes must have been scheduled to be paid by Pell Grant and remaining through Stafford Loans. Once you withdraw from college middle of class, one of two things can happen. 1(1) Your school has charged you for whole class or (2) Your school has prorated your tuition and only charged you for number of days you attended class.
For number one senerio, your college has kept all the Pell and Loans that to cover the tuition. Pell doesn't have to be paid back. Loans go in repayment after 6 months of withdrawal.
For number two senerio, your college prorated pell and loans to match cover the prorated tuition and send the rest Pell grant to the government and rest Stafford Loans to the Lender.

You going back to college or not will not determine if you have to or not have pay back to "FAFSA"( thats just name of the application, you are asking if you will have to pay back to govenment and Lender). You already have been charged for classes you took and you have to pay them back for loans.
Contact your school and reenroll, you might have to fill out 2007-2008 FAFSA as 2006-2007 FAFSA expires on June 30' 2007. Ask the Financial Aid office about the charges you have from your last class and who was the Lender(bank) through you had your stafford loans and then ask you school to complete deferrment request form to stop that loans going into repayment period . Hope this Helps! If you have any more questions, you may contact me.

I agree with Mandita. Talk with your school's aid office. They can tell you what happened. A lot may depend on how you 'stopped going' if you just stopped going to class or if you went on an official leave of absence or withdrew.

And yes, the FAFSA is just the application for aid (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The money doesn't come from "FAFSA" it either comes from the Department of Education (Pell and other Grants, work study, etc) or a bank (Stafford loans, private loans).

Good luck!

It depends what the fafsa gave you. if it was a grant or scholarship you don't have to pay back anybody but you will have to pay back a loan. If it was a loan and you dropped out fairly recently I assume you have a few years to pay it off.

If you owe the fafsa for not completing the courses, then yes, you will have to pay it back.
