ok i restarted my pc and this came up when trying to boot up.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
WINDOWS\system\c_1252.nls

then it says to put the OS disc in and hit R to repair it.
i do that but then it just takes me to what looks like a command line script thing. what do i type in to fix it?
if anyone could help i would really appreciate it. i have a lot of sentimental things on there.

no .. dont use the first repair thingy, u dont want the recovery console .. go on to install windows then hit R later ... you will see ... after you get to the part that its detecting the partitions and sees another xp install it will give u the option to repair it ... thats the one u want ...

First off, I am amazed at the amount of incorrect information that is given here! The repair utility does NOT erase your hard drive. If the message is telling you to repair your Windows installation, there is no harm in it.

Boot into your Windows XP CD and when prompted to press "R" for repair do so. Once you get to the black screen (usually black) that is the command prompt. Type in:

chkdsk /r

This command will run a checkdisk and repair any error in your Windows install. If you continue to have problems you may have a hardware issue. Depending on who you bought the computer from you can get tech support to help you run some sort of diagnostic (provided that it is available) to detect hardware failures. For example, at work we use Dell and they include a separate partition on the hard drive that has diagnostic tools install to check for hardware failures.

Running the repair outside of Windows is actually better from my experiences since it keeps Windows completely closed while it repairs it, lower the risk of causing a crash or error.

Another thing, the repair may seem to hang at times depending on the size of your hard drive and the amount of errors it finds.

FYI, taking your computer to a store to have them scan it for your is bogus, they run the same utilities and perhaps a custom made utility that performs the same functions... its their excuse to charge you all that extra money.

OPTION1: Did u try using windows xp's system restore function? If it was enabled then u should have restore checkpoints created on your system just recover to previous state at which windows xp was working fine. If u dont know how to launch the system restore application then here are the steps. Go to Start>>All progams>>Accessories>>Sysytem Tools>(Then finally)System restore. Just launch the application and recover to previous saved point. OPTION2: Most of the mainboards these days have the capabilities to boot from a usb drive so just read the manual of your laptop to see if your laptop supports this fuction. If YES then u will be able to boot your usb CD/DVD drive into dos even if its plugged into USB. Peace out!

I would start with running sfc /scannow from the Run dialog box. If that does not work here is a guide from Microsoft on how to preform a Repair.

Repair install directions.

Your best option is to take it into a local computer repair store. What they will have to do is:

1) Test your hard drive to make sure it's still okay
2) Backup your information (They could charge anywhere from 80 to a few hundred dollars for this)
3) Reinstall windows (This will also be about 100 dollars and above)

In case your hard drive is dead, that's another 100 dollars.

As for using the repair feature, it will wipe your hard drive clearing it of all your information and reinstall windows.

Try again in Safe-Mode and do a system restore back to a few days ago or before your problem started.
