Just for once I was hoping that someone would pick up on the real 'error' here, not the asker's apparent inversion of the old fallacy story about David.

So, no takers ? OK, let's see if we can get this right.

According to 2 Samuel 21:19, it appears that Elhanan killed Goliath of Gath, the Gittite. There is confusion, and in anaother passage it was credited to David. But even this is misleading, David is described as the 'little shepherd boy' sent by his mother to bring the older brothers there packed lunch, as younger shepherd boy brothers frequently do in time of pitched battle type of wars !

However, read the Hebrew texts that were not included in the 'Old Testament' and you will find that a very different David appears. He was, at the time of the 'Goliath' incident a well-established general in Saul's army, a mighty warrior of some renown. He subsequently had a serious falling-out with Saul, who had some quite serious mental health problems, and fled for his life. Many of his men went with him, and for several years they acted as mercenaries, offering their fighting services to any who would pay their rates, including the self-same Philistines !

So it isn't only the asker who has a hazy understanding of the historical details, it seems that just about anyone who hasn't taken the time to study the subject is under a highly suspect set of impressions.

No!
You've got it mixed up!
Here is the story...

David was the sheperd boy and Goliath was the giant.
David was a brother of some of the soldiers in the oposing army and David was just bringing bread to them. He saw how they were all to scared to fight him so he said he would do it.
David and Goliath made a bet. If Goliath won, the Jews would because their slaves, but if David won, they would become slaves for the Jews. Goliath laughed and laughed when David came out after refusing the sword and shield and had only a cloth sling and three smooth rocks.
Then he said 'I come in the name of the Lord'
Then he put a rock in the sling and the sling went round and round and round and round then.....
Weeeeeeee
Hit Goliath in the nose and he fell down dead!

Hehe, bit of a weird ending!

Hope that helped!

Liv

God Bless!

Goliath was a Philistine, a giant of a man.
David was a shepherd boy, a teenager.
He killed Goliath by flinging a stone at him with his sling; it hit Goliath in the head and knocked him out. Then David cut off Goliath's head with a sword.

If anything, I think Goliath still had an advantage over David since he was also equipped with lethal projectile weapon (a spear) and a heck of an arm to throw it. A spear is to a football as a slingshot is to a lacrosse stick. Goliath is to Drew Brees as David is to a high school lacrosse player. Ultimately, only mattered who shot first, and in the case of this story, that was David.

The force of a six foot leather sling is near equal to that of .357 magnum. A one-pound smooth stone from a riverbed was thrown with such force, it sank into the giant's forehead, just below the lid of the helm. Damned good aim, I'd say, but this was quite common in the day.
Then the boy took the Philistines own sword and cut his unconscious head off neat..
