It's best to eat a little something before you take them. However, it's not absolutely necessary. Eating food should not affect the efficiency of the medication to control pain. But you may notice that you feel more "normal" after you've eaten something, as far as the feelings of lightheadedness when you've first taken the med.

What should I avoid while taking Vicodin?

This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Vicodin will affect you. Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls or other accidents.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other cold, allergy, pain, or sleep medication. Acetaminophen (sometimes abbreviated as APAP) is contained in many combination medicines. Taking certain products together can cause you to get too much acetaminophen which can lead to a fatal overdose. Check the label to see if a medicine contains acetaminophen or APAP.
Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of liver damage while taking acetaminophen.

Eating after you take one of those medicenes doesn't debase the full effect. That's why with these medicenes it says to eat on a full stomach. If you take it without anything in your system, it tears up the lining of your stomach.
