i mean if they don't believe in a God...why are they poking their noses into this section....

maybe they are curious and in self - denial.

or maybe they are trying to assure themselves by questioning alot that God really doesnt exist.

but still, we christians welcome you to the spiritual world!

to me atheists are: people who do not believe in God. people who will NOT ENTERTAIN the idea of "god".

unless those atheists in this section are all half-baked, not really convinced atheists.

This is such a common question and it's amazing to me that it's even asked. My response to the believers is:

You should be glad that Atheists are on here.

Do you not have compassion in your heart? Do you not believe that their very souls are in danger of forever being burned in hellfire? Well, this is your chance to be a good believer and reach out; or are you only concerned with preaching to the choir?

I believe that you are on here for the best of reasons - you love your faith and believe it will save you and others.

Haven't you ever really wondered why Atheists are on here as well?

They, like you, believe there is probably no more important question in the world than "Is there a God?"

So why would you be upset if they were just trying to test themselves to see if there really is a good reason to believe? You should be glad (unless you are happy with the thought of souls burning in hell, which I believe you are not.)

But Atheists have good intentions as well (even though they may not always show it). Imagine for a moment that they are right and there is no God...

Then religious wars, scaring children with threats of hell, and persecution of homosexuals were all just a shameful waste. Moreover, look at the atrocities caused by the beliefs of groups like the Catholic church that teaches AIDS ridden areas of Africa and the Americas that condom use is a sin. They are (at least partly) responsible for the loss of innocent life. Believers spend more time worshiping their imaginary friend then they do caring about real issues like alleviating poverty, or doing something about the great problems this planet faces. With that in mind, the best thing atheists could be doing is trying to introduce people to a logical way of thinking and overcome their superstitions.

Also, consider what you asking this question really says... if you are worried about people who question your belief system, maybe you are not all that secure in your beliefs. If your beliefs are logical, then answer their questions; it shouldn't be an issue.

Ultimately, what matters is who is right (if any of us), and how do we know that.

If you wish to know more about the damage that religion causes, I suggest you read "The End of Faith," and "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris.

EDIT:
"to me atheists are: people who do not believe in God. people who will NOT ENTERTAIN the idea of 'god'."

Then that explains why you don't understand why atheists are on here. In truth, most atheists have thought deeply about the God question, and often know more about the Bible than believers. Afterall, you must understand what it is that you are rejecting.

I find a couple of things amusing about this subject, the first being that religion and spirituality have nothing at all to do with each other, as is easily evidenced by simply observing the behavior of religious people who are leading the rest of the religious people.

Think about that for a few, if it doesn't immediately make sense.

The other thing I find amusing about this is the fact that there are religions around who have a documented history of invading foreign lands and practicing genocide on the native peoples, and when confronted with this truth, say something along the lines of, " We don't do that anymore, so what is your problem? Come on down to the church, and we'll show you what we're all about!".

Pretty funny, huh?

Poor sylvester, are you incapable of using a dictionary to discover the meaning of the word "religion"? I'll help you out on this one. Go to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary and type in the word "religion". You will find that one definition is "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith". Now, type in the word "faith". One definition is "something that is believed especially with strong conviction". I, along with many others, believe ardently and with strong conviction that there is no god. You, and many of my fellow atheist brothers and sisters, will have to accept that atheism, in the strong form, is a religion of its own. Notice that religion does not have to include any form of deity or supernatural entity. We belong here.

It is great to have them on this site. What a wealth of witnessing can be done. It is our chance to spread the good news in such a non threatening manner that they listen and then think about it before they make the choice to deny God or to believe in Him.

No, I do not find it amusing.

I am here as I am curious as to what motivates religious people to believe in God.

Being a tolerant and a curious person I like to learn about other peoples beliefs and cultures - it gives you a deeper understanding of all people.

I am not here to argue with you or try to push my agnostic beliefs on you, nor am I in 'denial'.

actually yes. I see a lot of questions about us as Christians imposing our beliefs on them and how much they hate religion but they sure do let it dictate their lives.....SOME athiests are on here answering EVERY question yet hate the Bible and God and try to convince us He doesnt exist...but when we try to convince them he does we are peddling our beliefs and should stop........and man oh man do they get mad. Especially against those of us that follow Jehovah! To me an atheist is someone who does not believe in a higher being.....whatever any religion calls it....and some of the atheists on here are getting mad about you asking why they are on a religious page when they hate religion and they are calling their belief a religion so.....guess they hate themselves then huh!?

i'm atheist and additionally religious (Buddhist leanings). The section is faith and SPIRITUALITY, no longer Christian ideals. My evaluations are as valid as any theists. i do no longer attempt to disprove the existence, basically answer questions in accordance to my ideals.

No, I find it amusing that those of christendom STILL think that "religion and spirituality" means "christendom solely" and think they are clever in asking a dumb question that has been asked a thousand times already, and thus they reinforce everyone else knowledge of their stupidity. The most spiritual people in the world have NOTHING to to with christendom. Thou art the LEAST spirited of of any humans, proof of that in the fact that you willingly kneel and worship, and are ready to do so for eternity.

Sad really.

Why? Atheism is a religion. Anytime I post a question not only do the Christians and the Muslims try to convert me. The Atheists do too.

Yes, sometimes they're very funny. I like their presence here. It makes for good discussion and debate.

By the way, who said R&S is only for those who believe in God?
