That the bible is a set of rules that are set in stone and cannot be altered?

It is my knowledge that the stories have been changed from there original state to suit the catholic church..many of you know this and you still believe in them...?

Please, do not be offended or think that I am a bad person. I am simply trying to understand the logic?

Skating 2565 - Yes, I have heard of the dead scrolls. I am a catholic just a questioning one. My question was infact about the bibles written to suit people - I understand where you are coming from but I still believe faith in yourself and what you are doing is way more important then any book. Your natural instinct tells you to do the right thing listen to it..you will find that you don't need the book.

I think it's because, as the times, are moving on and society is developing, so must religion. The same basic principles are there, they just alter certain things. People seem to believe in the bible, because it's human nature to assume that everything that has been created around us cannot simply be some coincidence, or bit of luck, and that some higher power must be out there and may be responsible for the way our planet began, and the reason that we are on the earth. You have to remember that everything in the bible is not meant to be taken literally. :)

Have you heard of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

They are the oldest known copy of the old testament. Much of the scrolls are pretty battered. I think it is the book of Ecclesiastes that is intact in its entirety. The others are in fragments, but are well preserve now for much study.
They are thousands of years old some of them were believed to have been used to start a fire till someone read one. That event itself was centuries after they were written.

In a comparison of the original languages the oldest known bible books in history are very, very close to todays. Very few changes have been made. All but one were simple changes in spelling, like center or centre. Same meaning but a change is spelling.

There are different "versions" of the bible in print. There are also bible "paraphrases" in print. A paraphrased version is not a bible at all. But is where someone rewrote passages in an effort to make them easier to understand.

Real translations take one of two paths.
1. Word for word translation from the original language.
These are true translations, but difficult to understand for most non-bible scholar folks.

2. Original meaning or feel of the original language.
These attempt to smooth the rockiness of the word for word translations by presenting the text to represent the "feel" of the language.

The real King James (like you would see in England) is somewhat different than the one Catholics use in the US.
It is the most accurate translation, but is in the Kings English, so a bit sticky for many new to scripture today.

REAL translations (not paraphrases) are very detailed as each word of the original has to be examined in context and many scholars must agree to the way each word is used.
The NIV (New International Version) is the most popular today. It was 25 years in the translation process.

So in short the bible as we know it today is the same as it was originally.

There are other translations, many paraphrases. Some that have been written to please people that don't like what the real bible says about some topics. So in that sense a new person to the bible must be a bit wary of the intent of the publishers today. But sticking with known, good solid translations is not difficult and makes picking out the frauds or self serving types pretty easy.

A very common argument for not using or believing what the bible says is it has been edited over and over etc. That comment is always made by someone with little knowledge of scripture itself or the history behind it. It get so bad sometimes people literally make up stuff and scream from the roof tops about their new discovery. Their discovery will go away and the bible will still be there.

This is a huge topic. Way bigger than can be covered in any detail here. But I hope this helps to clarify things for you a bit.

You might want to ask a Catholic priest or pastor why they don't eat meat on Friday and such. It could be because that is a day they choose to be meat free for whatever reasons they have. Plus, some people don't mind those rules, so they do them anyway.

I believe that some of the rules in the bible had been altered. Like homosexuality for example. However, most of what the bible says is very helpful to everyday living, which is one reason why it is such a good book.

Plus, you have to remember that not everyone questions the ruling of the bible, if they are a devote Christian then they will want to follow his rules to achieve all benefits possible or to prove their faithfullness. The same goes for me. I want to prove my love and devoution to God by following as many of his rules as I can.

Your information is incorrect.. All the books in the bible were divinely inspired by God, the Catholic Church compiled the bible. You can check the Dead Sea Scrolls There is a set of rules that are set in stone, they are called the 10 Commandments(which are in the Ark of the Covenant). And no the bible can not be changed or altered. Granted certain sects have changed the bible to suit their agendas and they will pay for their sin of doing this.

Revelation 22:18-9 which states:

"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book."

It is easier to believe the bible since it takes most of the guess work out life. People want to take the path of least resistance. That is why the concept of sin is there to keep everyone in line. You even have rewards like eternal life to help with the shocking idea of dieing. The bible is a myth just like all the other ones. Some of the old myths lasted a long time as well. But people are starting to wake and use their minds today. No offense but christians have a hard time accepting reality as it is, they live in denial.

Actually more scrolls of the ancient texts were found in the last century and the translations of the Bible that have been done since about 1950 are more accurate than ever before and confirm everything the church included except the books of the Apocrypha.

How about enlightening us as to what those changes are? I have studied many modern translations and versions of the Bible where the scholars doing the translating intentionally attempted to eliminate all inclusion of external influence. As their source they obtained every available early text. If something has been missed I would certainly wish to be informed.

I'm sure God made it so no one could alter the Bible. The Qur'an and the Book of Mormon were just slip-ups. They'll be erased from history when God is ready.
