Your old passport automaticaly becomes invalid once your have got a new/renewed passport. So, the question of keeping the old passport or destroying the same does not arise since it is not a valid one. For all purposes your new passport comes into the picture under its validity.

Each country does a different thing to invalidate the passport and send it back. The UK cuts the front right corner off.
Most countries will send the old passport back as it would contain required information about any visas or travel history that you may need to declare.

I believe so. I still have mine from a looooong time ago (wish I had been more aware of the stamps, I was only 16 when I did my good out of the country travelling and didn't know you could ask for stamps if they didn't just stamp it). Of course, mine expired and I haven't gotten a new one...

it depends on your country. Here in the Phils., when you renew your passport, you have to attach the old one to the new one. One way also would be to declare your old passport lost so you can keep it for yourself and still be able to get a new one.

The passport office will send you back the old one with the new one, it will just have a punch hole through it so it can't be used again. It's not a big hole, more like the size you make at the office.

Yes, I still have to keep mine because I still use the visas in my old passport. So keeping it to remember your trips would be fine.

Yes. They realize folks want to keep their memory books. The old one will be sent back to you when you renew.
