I am not sure the story was exaggerated.... The Greeks have a flood myth (Atlantis), the Brazilians do, even the Hawaiians. They all believe in a massive flood. Oh and the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh. People of course try to spin this and say, "see! Noah's ark is just stealing that story".... I don't see it that way. I see all these civilizations talking about a major flood and I realize it is obvious there was such a flood.

Before I answer you let me correct another answer.
NASA definitely confirms that Global Warming is a reality, human caused, and a threat.

Now. I do not know of any atheists who are complaing about the Noahide Flood. I have only ever heard them say that it never happened. That there is not a single shred of evidence to indicate that such a thing could happen, and a wealth of evidence that it would be impossible to happen.
If the flood story comes out of the area of lower Iraq then it is possible that there was a local flood. Kind of like what happens in the midwest and around Winnepeg almost every spring.
If the flood story was true like in the Bible then there should be Bison and Kangaroos in the Middle East. It does not take much brain power to realize that there is something seriously wrong with the flood story.
Now it is pretty easy to see why people would create a flood story. Before people had figured out that mountains could be pushed up by the earths crust moving they were finding fossils of shells and other marine artifacts on mountains. They were making up an explanation for how they might have got there. If you knew almost nothing about geology how would you explain to your kids how there were clamshell on top of the local hills?
We have better explanations now.

If the Bible can't be taken for what it says. As you say "It's exaggerated". Then how do you know it's true? The evidence says that there was no world wide flood.
Why should some god murdering so many people and animals ever be seen as a 'good' thing? Such rationalizations further continue to example that religion devalues life which is a point I've been making for a long while now.

Well, I do not believe in the flood, so how can I complain about it? There is no evidence for a worldwide flood.
In fact, it's more likely to be the opposite if you study the solar system, where water is lost to space, not spontaneously increased to engulf a planet: There used to be liquid oceans on Mars, but they evaporated because the world could not hold an atmosphere, and there is no longer water on Venus, either, which is above 800 degrees Fahrenheit.
I think you need a primer on biology and geology.
How can you prove that a god exists or flooded the earth as told in Genesis? Really, how do you prove these things? Can you find it in the fossil layers? Does the evidence fit your views?
The evidence does not. But feel free to discover this for yourself.

i consider myself atheist even though i somewhat beleive there is a higher being. that entity must be doing somehting that no one else could. but the bible is a compilation of the stories created by some of the greatest thinkers in the history of the world. the stories they fabricate are truly unique. it's possible the world has gone through some dramatic weather changes. if our civilization today were 2000 years behind in technology. then we'd probably thnk some higher being were punishing us with the warm weather changes we're currently experiencing. so yes, something like the flood probably did occur that was unlik something those neolithic beings have ever experienced. but historians later on have made it more dramatic adding some tadbits to make it sound more interesting. that's what i believe =]

Actually, I'm not going to disagree. The idea that a large tsunami or other large flooding inspired the story of the flood is quite plausible, though unproven.
However, the second part about global warming and all...I'm just not getting the connection.

I don't believe in the flood at all, and the idea of a whole population of people DROWNING doesn't make me happy. We're talking babies and children here. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine what it feels like to drown. I can't imagine anything worse. Now picture a helpless baby, who has never done anything wrong and doesn't understand what's happening to it, and just wants it's Mommy, (who can't help it because she's drowning, too) dying like that. No, that doesn't make me happy. I look at my two innocent children (ages 4 and
1 1/2) and I know that only the most evil of beings could do anything to hurt them.

Wow. I have to be worried about all that stuff to be an Atheist? Does that mean Christians have to want global warming, mass extinctions, more pollution, and overpopulation?
Can't I just not believe in any gods and look at the geology to tell what happened in the distant past when the sediments were deposited?

I may not speak for all Atheists but I certainly care about environmental issues.. I must have read the question wrong because I find it hard to believe that someone could be so dang dense

You say "our population would be MUCH larger". Does that mean we should be happy about the tsunami? The Holocaust?
Floods don't prevent global warming and pollution...And the flood actually would have killed all the wildlife.

There was never a worldwide flood that covered the highest mountaintops as described in your bible. If there had been, we would still see the evidence of it today, and we don't. It simply is not true. When will you christians realize that the bible is not a history text, nor a science book? It is a book about morality and philosophy, nothing more.
