I just heard on the Discovery Channel that Neanderthals had funerals and burried their dead. I've read that chimps have similar rituals.
Think they have a shot at the afterlife?

I think animals just die... like everything else. Possibly, if disposed of in the right place, they could contribute to the growth of something else.
Death rituals do not necessarily indicate the belief in / existence of an afterlife.
Oh yeah... I'm not a pet person / animal lover.

It's an irony that as the hominid brain evolved enough to ask "why", and where there were no answers a deity was invoked as the cause, yet now with the modern human brain and the wealth of scientific data there are still those who adhere to primitive, infantile, or childlike concepts not unlike those fashioned 100's of thousands of years ago, except now they dare not ask why, because the known mainstream scientific answers challenge the credibility of their faith..
Christians, creationists and the like are anti-evolutionary in more ways then one..!!
Were the aquistion and application of intimate knowledge of the natural world compulsory to ones survival, there would be no religious people around at all.
But alas, they thrive in the comfy lifestyle that science has allowed them, while denying it to be true..

How can anyone categorically say that animals do not have souls? Do you REALLY know this for sure? How can you be so arrogant to think that humans are the only animal with a soul?
This is a load of rubbish - I totally believe my dog has a soul, most animal owners would believe this.
And if YOUR heaven does not allow dogs or cats or any other of our wonderful animals then I do not care to spend anytime there. I would rather spend time in a place that takes care of the animals.

I just read a book called Fearsome Fauna, about all the parasites that live in humans. Maybe they are the only ones going to heaven.

ive been told by everyone that animals dont go to heaven and that they just rot in the ground
but i dont think so!!!
i think all animals go to heaven
because i dont know why God would let us get attached to an animal or pet and love it and then NEVER see it AGAIN after it dies.. it just seems too cruel
theres a place for everything in heaven including animals

According to the bible? Humans. The bible says nothing about non-human animals not having souls, that is what humans infer from the bible saying that humans do have souls. The bible does say this-
Ecc 3: 18-21
18 I also thought, "As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath [b] ; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal [c] goes down into the earth?"

Ahh, the great soul and animal debate.
As a Catholic, I've been taught that,
"There are no animals in heaven, they don't have souls!"
In my opinion, you are supposed to be happy in heaven, right? I guarantee I won't be happy if I won't have a dog or two around. Heaven cannot be perfect if there are no animals.
In other cultures, many animals are worshipped.
Don't forget that NO WHERE in the Bible does it say "DOGS HAVE NO SOULS."
