In a perfect world, people could live that close to work. In the real world, most jobs are in urban areas, and most people do not want to live in a city environment!

it would be nice if everyone commutes only within 10 miles from their home, but that can never become a reality for different reasons. 1) most of the job opportunities are in the major city. there are not very many jobs available in the suburbs, especially high paying jobs. 2) the cost of living in the big city is very high, compared to a suburban area. it is very difficult to even find a decent house/apartments at a reasonable price, not to mention most of the urban areas have high crime rates, esp. in a particular neighborhood. most people prefer a more cleaner, safer environment, esp. when it comes to raising their kids. commute may be long, but they dont pay as much on their mortgage as they would if they live in the city, and it provides better safety for their kids.

If I could make the money I make that close to home it would be great. Look at 5-10 minutes around your own home. Can you make the needed money in that distance? I would bet the answer is no. It would be nice, but it is not realistic for most people.

If you are young and single and don't need much money, I guess you could do that. Get a family and you would not ask this question.

People should live wherever they choose to live. Generally, most people follow the "Drive 'til you can afford it" philosophy, meaning they drive far enough from an urban area until they get the home they want that is affordable. Pollution from cars has been brought down to negligible levels in the last 20 years. Most of the worlds pollution these days comes from factories in third-world countries that can't afford to clean up their emissions.

If you consider how many times people are laid off, plus the costs and complications of moving, how could a person maintain such a lifestyle even if they chose to? Further, how could a couple, most likely working for separate companies do it? Considering the difficulties of finding work and housing the theory rarely works.
Besides, most of the world's air pollution comes from Indonesian cooking fires and volcanic eruptions. Not from American cars, as the far left would have us believe.

I live 35 miles from work. There's a nice development within a short walk of my office. I'd really appreciate it if some kind soul would convince someone living in that development to trade houses with me ... but it's not going to happen.
