the inquisition, and the office for the promulagation of the faith which eventually over saw the inquisition. he also had the Holy Roman Emporer at the time conduct supressions and reprisals against the "heretics", who was anyone who did not profess the Roman Catholic faith.
This was not the Roman Catholic church's "shining hour" and, unfortunately, it follwed the crusade and later lead to both the first and second world wars.

The Pope called the Coucil of Trent which worked a Catholic Reformation. Much was reorganized such as the Curia and many church practices were reorganized
