My dog was crate trained perfectly until I took a 3 week vacation and left the dog with some friends. It is my guess that they didn't take him out to pee nearly as often as they should have and now my dog has gotten accustomed to peeing in his kennel everyday. The vet said he is healthy and the kennel is the right size for him. He is not left in the kennel too long either. Sometimes he pees when he has only been in there for one hour! How do I train him that the crate is not his bathroom?

Well, first always take him out to the bathroom before you put him in the crate. Do NOT put any towles or similar items inside. Dogs like to pee on this stuff. Try not to leave him alone for a logn time. Go out to maybe get some thigns or whatever, come back in thirty minutes or so, and if he hasn't peed, give him LOTS AND LOTS of love and one or two treats. Then let him out to roam around. Do this two or three times daily. Then, he'll start to see that when he doesn't pee, he gets REALLY good treatment. But, if he does pee, in a firm voice, say, "NO!" Then point to the pee, force nose to it (not in it, just so that he knows what ur talkin' about) and say "no" again. PLEASE DO NOT HIT though. The dog prob. doesn't even remember. But if you put his nose to it, i'm sure he'll get a clue.

good luck!

Hmmm...that's a tough one. My suggestion would be to only keep him in his crate for sleeping (at night), at least for the next little while, until after this behaviour has subsided. If they learn to see the crate as their bed, and only their bed, they will be far less likely to pee in it, seeing as it's their bed.
