The Bronze star is awarded for acts of valor
A bronze service star just denotes participation in military campaigns or multiple engagements in the same campaign. It's an addition to a service medal.
You've seen men in uniform with the ribon medals on their left chest I assume. Those are service metals. The bronze service star would be placed on one of those ribbons if they went to that campaign more than once.
The Bronze Star is a special medal only awarded for actions of valor not just because you served.

As you'll see by following the source link, a Bronze Star is a personal medal and a bronze service star is generally placed on certain ribbons to indicate successive awards. For example, a servicemember wearing a Good Conduct medal (or ribbon) with 2 bronze stars indicates that the individual has been awarded a total of 3 Good Conduct medals.

They are the same I believe. The ones you mentioned. There is another!
I have one that is different than the ones you mention. Unfortunately some units gave them to almost everyone (the one you are referring to).
The Bronze star you refer to is for service, the Bronze star with a "V" device, like mine, is for VALOR! Two different awards. I wish they would do away with the one without the V"! Most people don't have a clue that their are 2 different awards for the same medal!
Mine is red with a bronze star on the bottom. The outer edges are white and it has a blue stripe going down the middle from top to bottom. The blue also has a white edge. The difference in mine is I have a "V" device in the middle on the blue field, and also on the ribbon! That to will not get you a cup of coffee!
PS. Doc, you have it wrong. I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about! I am sitting here looking at mine!
Read this and there is a picture of it minus the "V"!
The Bronze Star Medal is a United States Armed Forces individual military decoration which may be awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. When awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the 9th highest military award (including both combat and non-combat awards) in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations.

The "Bronze Star" is a medal awarded for some act of heroic purportion -- usually in combat. The bronze service star is a small star that goes over the ribbon or medal denoting that you've been awarded that particular ribbon or medal more than once. At five times, it changes to a larger gold star.
My buddy George got a Bronze Star for his work in Desert Storm. Why, I'll never know. He was in a unit that was behind mine and the only "action" they saw was our fire fights from a distance of about two to five miles! The guy that was with him, got nothing. He (also a friend of mine) claims it was all politics. Me? I got a Combat Action Ribbon (with three bronze stars). That and about $1.50 might buy me a cup of coffee.

The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States not justifying a higher award. It may be awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S Armed Forces, distinguishes him or herself by extraordinary heroism involving one of the following actions: In action against an enemy of the United States... While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force...While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. --------------------------------------... The Bronze Star Medal is a United States Armed Forces individual military decoration which may be awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. When awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the 9th highest military award (including both combat and non -combat awards) in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations. The medal is awarded to a member of the military who, while serving in or with the military of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished him- or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. In short Silver is for action against an enemy...and Bronze is for being heroic in your service.(Theres not much difference if you ask me)
