I thought adulterers were people who had extra-marital relations, and not someone who was sexually active without being married. I see this here often, so I wanted to ask directly, what is your definition of adulterer?

the only way to explain this is to quote Jesus who said,
I tell you the truth, if you even look at another person with lust in your heart, you have already committed adultery....
that's a paraphrase of course,
Matt 5:27,28
27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.28"But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.""
blessings :)
edit: sorry - fornication is sex without marriage

In the bible an adulterer was someone who's married and having an extra marital relationship,
but you have to know that language changes over time, well for me it still and i believe that's what is always going to be.
if you are sexually active without being married it has nothing to do with u been an adulterer.

God uses adultery in scripture to represent going after other Gods than he. In the secular sense, adultery would be going after what is not yours in a sexual way, a single woman and a married man both are guilty of adultery.
The old testament tells us if a man lay with a virgin in the eyes of God they are married. The sex act more than the ceremony makes you married.
Anyone who worships other than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are adulterers. Any single or married that lay another are adulterers .
Only two single people can have sex but that act marries them.

If an unmarried person is having sex with a married person, that's adultery too.
More generally there's the category "fornication" or "sexual immorality" which encompasses all forms of sexual depravity. Depending on the Bible version you use "fornication" and "sexual immorality" are used interchangeably.
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (NIV)
Heb 13:4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (NKJB)

We get our guidance from the scriptures. An adulterer is a person that lusts after someone other than their spouse. If you as a man look at a woman to lust after her you have committed adultery in your heart. Jesus knows every heart. The Holy Spirit will leave such a person if to their own devices without speedy repentance. Jesus saves us from our sins not "in" our sins. You will get all kinds of answers to this from people justifying their actions but being pure is the only one accepted by God.

When I was a kid and asked about it, it was explained to me this way: Adultery involves extra-marital relations. The rest of it (all other sexual immorality) falls under the label of fornication, not adultery. So, for example, pre-marital sex would be fornication.

Kind of a trick quesion to a lot of people.
There is a section in the bible which states that...when a man lays with a woman, they become one and are considered bonded together by God in Matrimony.
So, going by that...after your first sexual partner, anything more is commiting adultry.
Going by that...there is no such thing as "an unmarried sexually active person".

Hi Shaka La`har. God tells us that marriage is Holy in Hebrews 13:4:
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
God tells us more in Matthew 5:28:
“but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
God also tells us we are to abstain from premarital sex. He warns us very clearly in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 that we are not to have premarital sex:
“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;”
The marriage institution is under attack from the whole world, and having sex out of wedlock is the main reason. This is one of the main reasons for the high rate of divorce, everywhere we look we see sex being used to sell something or make us feel good. And sex does make us feel good but it should only be used after marriage. This is one reason people should take time to know each other before getting married.

Yeah, I thought fornicators were people that had sex without being married. I was always told adultery is sex while being married (to someone else). Shows what I know....they're rewriting that Bible all the time I guess.....

Adultery is extra marital sex, extra marital sex is any sex outside of marriage. If that doesn't work for you we also have fornication which is the sub-catagory of adultery dealing with what we call pre-marital sex. Guess the translation is stumping you?
