My grandfather was a marine in the korean war, and was wondering what type of rifle he might of carried. I have his bayonet, field knife, and beret (I guess that is what the marines call them).

Marines mostly carried the BAR {Browning Automatic Rifle}.

They carried several types of weapons. The M1 garand. Also at that time the 50 cal water cooled machine gun and the BAR or, browning Auto Rifle. Also the 30 cal carbine. In addition they carried the Grease Gun which was a 45 cal auto that could wipe out 10 or more troops with one burst. I know that they also carried a 12 guage 00 buckshot shot gun. The grease gun was fazed out during Nam and remains a very high priced collectors item. Also, the side arm at that time was the 45cal. pistol. I am sure there were more but these were the bread and butter weapons. Although I was a marine for 25 years I was a little too late for the Korean War. The M14 was not put into use until the Nam war. The BAR and sub machine guns were fazed out at the same time.

M-1 Garand, M-1 Carbine. And Thompson SMG and "Grease gun" SMG. The last two are definitely not rifle's. I don't expect any credit for that. Just adding it for your info. The Marine's did not use any beret back then. I expect you have a cross between a baseball cap and Civil War kepi the marines like to call a headcover. Jarhead's were never over intelligent, else they would be army airborne. I am trying to start an argument here, LOL. But heck there is nothing better than a Marine if you need someone to fight with next to you.

I do believe they used the M1 Garand during the earlier parts of the Korean conflict. But soon after the M14 rifle was put into issue. The M14 is very similar to the M1 but has the capability of automatic fire.

Most likely the Garand M-1 30 cal rifle. Other possibilities are the M-1 carbine or the Thompson sub-machine gun.

Yes they are marines. They used metal ring FS, that probably already does not exist more.
