You have to correct him every time and I mean every time. Make him sit before you open the front door even if it takes you forever. Tell him shh and nudge him every time. It'll be a hassle at first and will take your time and patience, but it'll be worth it in the long run. If he is not getting his daily exercise, he might be frustrated too.

So far, all the answers you've gotten had to do with discipline. Yes, that's important, but the most important need your JRT has is the need for exercise. Yes, even little dogs need it. Even your little yappy terrier has a strong hunting instinct that can only be fulfilled through long walks. Without such, frustration will build up. Terriers commonly express this through barking, as do many other dogs. Take him for a very long walk at least once a day. 45 minutes minimum. I sure would like to hear back about how this will change him. He'll be a lot calmer, and bark a lot less, I guarantee it. Only after this need is met will discipline make any different. I used the squirt gun method with my dog when barking persisted (usually only when guests were present and she was kept on the other side of the baby gate) My dog certainly never fears me as a result of the squirt gun. Ha! No, I don't even squirt her, anymore. After 1 or 2 squirt, I only have to hold the gun, and say, "quiet or I'll shoot." Anyway, my main point is this: DISCIPLINE WILL ONLY HELP IF YOU WALK YOUR DOG A MINIMUM 30 MINUTES A DAY. TIRED DOGS ARE HAPPY DOGS.

My grandma lived next door to a family with two dogs that would NOT stop barking 24/7. It was awful. So she went out and bought this contraption that had a couple buttons on it. When you pressed the button, it emitted a high pitched noise that only dogs can hear, and you press it whenever they are barking excessively, and it hurts their ears so they stop barking. Keep doing that every time they bark unneccessarily, and they will learn to not bark inappropriately. You should be able to buy them at pet stores and stuff.

Obedience training. It will teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. It will give you the skills to correct behavior problems. Don't listen to the fools that suggest the squirt bottle or rolled up newspaper as all they teach your dog is to fear you.

my parents had very good luck with a water gun. Don't drown it just a couple of squirts. He hardly ever barks unless it's some big deal.
