And, if so, does the government reimburse airmen who buy lotto tickets for the price of the tickets they bought?

I attended a briefing at the Foreign Technology Division (Wright-Patt AFB, OH) in 1985. I was "informed" that in the event I should win a lottery while on TDY the government would claim the money on the grounds that the government had made it possible for me to be in a position to buy the lottery ticket.

So you folks are saying that, basically, I was being lied to. Thanks, I thought there was something fishy about that.

They can't seize the money just because he was TDY to another state, but they WILL take about half of it in taxes.

The only absolutes in life are death and taxes....

Being lied to? That sounds so... wrong. No, I'd say they were more than likely having a little joke at your expense. (pun intended) Unless of course, as another person stated, you wrongfully used a government credit card for the purchase of said ticket. Then you'll be lucky if all they do is take the money.

Well if he used his Government Travel credit card to purchase the ticket (maybe when paying for gas for the rental car) the money for the lotto ticket was used in an Illegal manner and all the winnings would be forfeit. Since the card is only for Fuel, rental car, food and lodging not recreational use.
