It's a derogatory term...in this instance, meaning jerks, or creeps...not nice people.

It's often considered a form of swearing, and can be used in other ways. Many times, it's used as a verb...for example, "I can't believe that sodding idiot!". In this case, it is virtually interchangeable with the American word "f_uck". In a similar fashion, some might call someone a "sodder".

Literally translated, sod is a bit of damp grass.... not religious but I remember a hymn we sand at school which said "the couch was the sod...." which made us all snigger when we sang it.... as it can also mean someone who's not very nice....

It's milder than some of the words you can use, but it's still not a pleasant thing to be called.

I imagine if that phrase was written on this site, that the profanity filter would have blocked anything stronger :-)
