I would like to do the 'green' thing and reuse rather than just recycle. Read not safe to freeze water in empty water bottle and drink the water. That the freezing process absorbs chemicals from the bottle.

i use empty containers to freeze foods all the time and had no problems, as for freezing water in used water bottles never done me any harm. when i was at school i always used to fill an empty water bottle up with fresh water pop it in the freezer over night and take it to school on hot days, by lunch time half of it had melted and was lovely and cold, the rest had melted by the time school had finished so had a nice cold drink for walking home.

Freeze the water in a water bottle. Don't use a yogurt or other dairy container because you'll never get all the bacteria out of those containers and THAT will make you sick. Whoever told you not to freeze water in a bottle made for water need to go fill out an ID-10-T form.

It can, but most likely even if it does it wont hurt you. I freeze things in empty plastic conatiners all the time without problems.

Yes, just wash them well first. My great aunts used empty margarine containers, my grandma used old cottage cheese container, and my mother did the same. None of us ever got any weird poisoning from it.
