what would an officer do in this field of the navy?

Intelligence gathering. Usually naval intelligence use signal and electronic means to gather their intelligence, but they do use some human means. Naval intelligence is a great field to get into, if you are considering joining the Navy. I worked Army intelligence for 15 years now and love it. You have to think abstractly in this field, but it is the one place where opinions are welcomed.

It would also depend on whether is was Surface or Air Intelligence. I suggest you talk to a Naval Officer Recruiter, they have that information.

Its open to enlisted personnel as well.
In the field I gathered information on USSR ships being built and photo Intel as well as Intel on probable foes like Iran in the 70's. Its a wide open field.
