Other than "tasty on toast," vegemite is a spread made from yeast extract. Some more info:

Vegemite is a dark brown, salty food paste made from yeast extract, used mainly as a spread on sandwiches and toast , as well as a filling of pastries like Cheesymite scroll, and occasionally in cooking. It is similar to British Marmite and Swiss Cenovis.

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste may be described as extremely salty, slightly bitter, and malty, similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth, resembling margarine, although somewhat firmer and sticky. It is firmer and slightly sweeter than other yeast extracts.

Last summer there was an Australian girl who worked with me and her mum sent her some Vegemite. I tried it on her favorite crackers, and I found it incredibly salty and thick, but Maddy said that's because I'm used to American sweet and processed food. Could be, who knows. But that song that is typed out above is really cute, she sung it for us.

It's a yeast based spread. Made by Kraft in Australia. It's quite salty. Marmite is similar but not as salty. Some people think it has a horrible taste. I gave some to an American friend and she hated it. She passed it on to a work colleague who was from Australia. He hadn't tasted it for years.

Use it on toast, crackers, in sandwiches. Also can be used to flavour soups and casseroles (give the casserole a good deep coloured gravy) or even as a hot drink like Bovril.

The original recipe of Vegemite as a concentrated yeast extract has remained virtually unchanged for 80 years.

Yeast is known as a natural source of the vitamin B complex which includes thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, p-amino benzoic acid and several other compounds.

Yeast extract is four or five times more concentrated than yeast, making it one of the richest known sources of the vitamin B group. In addition to being rich in vitamin B, yeast extract also contains other essential proteins and minerals – all of which make Vegemite an excellent addition to the family diet.

A single serving of Vegemite (5g) on a slice of bread provides a large percentage of your daily vitamin B requirements:

% Proportion of Recommended
Daily Intake (RDI) Per 5g Per 100g

Thiamin
550 µg (50% RDI)
11.0 mg

Niacin
2500 µg (25% RDI)
50.0 mg

Riboflavin
430 µg (25% RDI)
8.6 mg

Folate 100 µg (50% RDI)** 2000 µg

**Recommended Dietary Intake for adults is 200µg or for women of
child bearing age, 400µg. It is important to maintain a varied diet.
