The Russian leadership is wise to use it as a pretext to support thier own military spending.

But, no, it's not a threat to them. It would be entirely inadequate to stop a Russian retaliatory strike, so in no way affects the balance of power between NATO and Russia, at least as far as MAD is concerned.

I think the whole human race should be worried, why the hell in this day and age do we really need to spend billions on these things, that. may not ever get used. or worse fall into the hands of some daft bugger who may actually press the fire button.

Sad fact is. whatever way your inclined to look at how the human race got this far,, we still not content enough unless we killing each other thro acts of war etc.

surely by now the human race should have learnt to put aside its difference and live peacefully upon this planet. which at most we may get to live on for a few short years.

Absolutely. An unbalanced world can be a dangerous thing. Treaties that are ratified by some and not followed by all don't help. They see the U.S. playing by its own rules and it makes them nervous. Aren't you usually nervous around people who don't care to observe social standards? You may not feel particularly threatened, but it is unsettling, right?

Russia's just saying, "Look, we can make you nervous, too. Why don't we just play by the same rules?"
