Due to the USA plan to build missile defense shield in Europe???

Hopefully Bush - and his warmongering troupes - will be out of office, prior to this nightmare occuring??? Takes me back to the days of 'cold war' politics . . . not a pretty picture to see history repeat itself . . . again, and again, and again . . .

Your feelings?

We'll end the war on terror only to restart the Cold War.

I actually blame the end of the Cold War and the ill-planned out fall of the Soviet Union for a good majority of our problems today. The world seems to work a lot more efficiently if there are two big superpowers dividng the world in half and threatening each other, but being sensible enough to not destroy the world in the process, more or less.

However, a revival of the Cold War wouldn't end the problems that have already occured, and add only more fuel to the fire of all the issues that the U.S. has to battle out right now. What we have to keep in mind is that Putin won't be in office for his entire life, he is technically a president. So unless he brings back the Soviety Union in full swing, a second Cold War would be highly unlikely.

However, a second Cold War now woudl be very different from the first Cold War, mostly in the involvement of Europe. I believe that Europe would not be able to be the victim to the Iron Curtain as it was then because of the EU and current day politics. That also brings the fact that due to European discontentment at American actions, the nations would be hesitant at best to aide the US. As for the Communist countries, North Korea would most likely only benefit once the war came into full political swing and threats started to be made, for a second Cold War could not come into effect instantly with threats and hatred, but rather diplomacy gone astray. Cuba would be thankful, and expecting, of Russian support for their economy, yet Russia may not be in a state to provide Cuba with what it needs, especially since the need for Cuba for a "second Cuban Missile Crisis" is near none if North Korea combines their nuclear program with a Russian one. As for China, it would be a make or break point for the Communist Party. Either China becomes truley Communist or they finally just admit to their capitailistic, socialistic at best, nature at this point in history. No longer could China play the inbetween card. It's hard to say for Vietnam, it doesn't seem like there'd be much political gain in the Soviet Union using Vietnam, but it will probably be allied with Russia merely for protection from a possible, yes I'm saying it, "second Vietnam War."

The funny thing about a second Cold War, is that its focus would be on history NOT repeating itself, at least from the Soviet side of things. These are different times, and perhaps that's enough to give Putin hope for different results.

The idea of the proposed 'missile shield' in Europe and Japan is to defend against attacks by 'rogue states' - such as Iran or the DPRK. Such attacks would involve relatively few and unsophisticated intermediate range ballistic missles. No concieveable shield could protect against the kind of retaliatory strike Russia could launch if it were attacked, so they're really no threat to thier security.

It's just a little rhetoric for Putin to use at home and abroad, it helps justify his military spending on more modern missle systems, for instance.

They say every single week in the newspaper that something like this is going to happen.

If it's true, it's just a stupid waste of money. But hey, it's more important to put trillions of dollars into developing new ways of killing people as efficiently as possible than making the world a better place in any way you could think of.

It's a lot easier to design offences to beat particular defences. As soon as this thing is done were they to build it, they'd find out that some special vehicle designed to beat it has been developed.

There is already an arms race. New weapons have come out every year since the cold war ended. Russia can't afford a convensional arms race (they can't even pay their military bases' electric bills) and they already have thousands of nuclear bombs.

Nah, it won't happen. Didn't you hear? Bush has invited Putin to his parents' compound in Maine. Everything is hunkey-dory.
