He was such a long time there the the englishment broke in.
He found the Scot lying in a pool of blood with a note attached to the knife in his stomach. The note read: "Here am i broken hearted paid a pound and only farted"

That joke is so old that it was only a penny when I first heard it.

By the way - "Here I sit, broken hearted, spent a penny and only farted" was actually written on the inside of a cubical door in the toilets at Glasgow Central railway station for many years. It was covered up when they re-painted it obviously.
