I don't know is your UK credit history follows you to the US. If it does, you will have equally bad credit in the US. If not, you will have NO credit in the US.

Don't play the credit game!
I don't know why us as Americans let big companies control how we pay for things buy scaring us with whats your credit report stuff.
I cut my credit cards up 5 years ago. Everyone I buy from says if you don't have credit then its bad! I say give me the best price or I wont buy your stuff now that's bad business for you.
True story here: My mom filed for bankruptcy so was considered bad credit. A couple of years later she had to make a loan and the bank was saying with her bad credit she would get this inter rest rate. I laughed my *** off and said give he a good inter rest rating that is fair to market value or you not making a dime on all that inter rest off her at all! The change it to inter rest befitting someone with amazing credit. Money talks and every one wants to make money. And don't pay late charges! That is the most absurd thing I ever heard of these people are making money off you for nothing. I not saying don't pay your bill on time but these late charge things are a scam! When they do company to company there on 30-90 days even up to 180 days were they pay and there not getting late charges so why should you!?!
Hold your ground and talk firm these people want your money remember that!!!
